Behring Teacher Ambassadors Announced! - Congratulations Vicki Galloway

WASHINGTON, D.C. – National History Day (NHD) announced this morning the 24 teachers selected as Behring Teacher Ambassadors for the 2015–2016 academic year. Local teacher Ms. Vicki Galloway from Reno County Education Co-op in Hutchinson was selected to represent Kansas.

The selected teachers have shown outstanding creativity, commitment and inspiration in developing students’ interest in history. Candidates must be excellent classroom teachers who are past winners of the Behring Teacher Award
in their affiliate program. Ms. Galloway was awarded the Behring Teacher Award for classroom excellence in NHD’s senior division in 2013.

Next year the 2015–2016 NHD theme is Exploration, Encounter, Exchange in History. Behring Teacher Ambassadors will work with students and teachers to help them better understand this theme and to expand NHD programs in their
regions. Participating teachers will attend a training workshop in July, collaborate with their program’s affiliate coordinator to develop a working plan and implement an action plan to support and expand NHD activities.

“The staff at National History Day firmly believe that quality teachers are the best educational tools students have,” said NHD Executive Director Cathy Gorn. “The teachers selected as Behring Teacher Ambassadors understand the impact the NHD program has on their students. These teachers are a credit to their discipline and a driving force behind the success of NHD programs.”

This program is made possible by the generous support of Kenneth E. Behring.

Congratulations to Topeka Seaman Middle School's Kyle Johnson!
This week NHD announced the 15 student and teacher teams selected for the Normandy: Sacrifice for Freedom Albert H. Small Student and Teacher Institute, and Kyle and his student will be representing Kansas. This program is designed to engage these teams in a rigorous study of D-Day and World War II. Students and teachers will be immersed in lectures presented by leading World War II historians, participate in a scholarly study of the war memorials in the D.C. area, and walk in the footsteps of history on the beaches of Normandy. Students will study and make presentations on various aspects of the Normandy Campaign.

This is an amazing educational experience. We encourage you to use some of the lessons, ideas, readings, and discussions to conduct a historical study of an individual buried at the Normandy American Cemetery in your classroom.
